Education Programs

           The Clarendon Soil and Water Conservation District promotes education throughout the community with continuing efforts to teach the basic concepts of natural resource conservation. The District offers many educational programs that are designed to enhance environmental awareness and teach the importance of conservation activities. In addition to those educational programs, the district also sponsors many educational events and activities throughout the year that the students of Clarendon County have the opportunity to be involved in.

 

 

 

 

Essay Contest

An annual writing competition for 5th & 6th grade students in Clarendon County. The topic varies from year to year and usually ranges from the conservation subjects of soil, water, forestry, and wildlife. Prizes are $30 for 1st place, $20 for 2nd place and $15 for 3rd place. Students only compete within their grade level.

Poster Contest

An annual contest for Kindergarten—4th grade and Special Education Classes. The theme for the contest is the same as the essay contest’s topic each year. Posters are a class/group effort and should use the creativity and efforts of all group members. The winning classes will receive a class ice cream party. Students only compete within their grade level.

Arbor Day Poetry Contest

An annual Arbor Day competition for Kindergarten—8th grade students in Clarendon County. The poetry contest theme for the 2008  is “A Tree For All Seasons”. There will be a first place county winner in each grade level who will receive a cash prize and a certificate.

Farm-City Coloring Contest

An annual Coloring Contest for Kindergarten—3rd grade students in Clarendon County. The Conservation District started this contest in an effort to spread the Farm-City message to the younger children of the county. The 2008 theme for the contest is “From Field To Fridge”.

Farm-City Photo Contest

This photo contest is open to all conservation youth commissioners. Youth may enter up to 2 photos each. Photos will be put on display at the annual Farm-City Luncheon where guests will vote for their favorite Farm-City Photo.

Teacher of the Year

This contest is to recognize the outstanding conservation education efforts of teachers to advance wise use, protection, and enhancements of our natural resources. Elementary (grades K-6) and secondary (grades 7-12) educators will be recognized in separate categories. The winners will receive a $50 cash prize.

Teacher Guidelines

School of the Year

This award is presented to recognize the achievements of an overall conservation program in a school—public or private—in Clarendon County. The winning school will receive a $100 prize.

Clarendon Conservation Youth Board

The Youth Board was established to assist and augment the Clarendon Conservation District in carrying out its objectives in natural resource management. The program is for students in grades 9-12 who are interested in learning more about their natural environment and the proper care and use of natural resources.

Beach Sweep/River Sweep

This cleanup event, organized by S.C. Sea Grant Consortium in partnership with S.C. Department of Natural Resources, is the largest one-day litter cleanup of South Carolinas beaches and waterways. Every third Saturday in September thousands of Carolinians clean rivers, lakes, creeks, beaches, marshes, and swamps of litter and aquatic debris. The water body adopted by the Clarendon Soil and Water Conservation Youth Commissioners is Taw Caw Park located at Goat Island. The cleanup event takes place at that location each year.

Carolina Coastal Adventure

This workshop, held in or around October of each year, provides an opportunity for 9th or 10th grade high school students to spend a fun weekend on the coast while learning about South Carolina’s natural resources. The Clarendon Conservation District usually sponsors two delegates to attend the event.

SC Envirothon

The SC Envirothon is an annual hand-on environmental problem-solving competition for high school student. Participating teams compete for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management. Each spring the competition is held at the Clemson University Sandhill Research and Education Center. The Clarendon Conservation District will sponsor one team to attend the event.

South Carolina Institute for Natural Resource Conservation

The South Carolina Institute for Natural Resource Conservation is an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors from across the state to study the environment up close for a week and leave with multiple rewards. Rewards include college scholarships, college credit, new friends and the opportunity to try new things. Each student who participates must be sponsored through their local Soil and Water Conservation District. The Clarendon Conservation District usually sponsors two students to attend the Institute.

South Carolina Commissioner’s School for Agriculture

SCCSA is a weeklong premier career and leadership-development summer program that informs, inspires and challenges student participants to consider a career in the agricultural, natural resource and life science industries. The program is for rising 11th or 12th grade students who are interested in the fields of agriculture and natural resources. The Clarendon Conservation District usually sponsors one student to attend the school.

Conservation Scholarship

The Conservation Scholarship was introduced by the district for Clarendon County high school graduates choosing an agricultural or environmental related field of study as their college major. The district will be awarding the top two applicants. The first place recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the second place recipient will receive a $500 scholarship.
